BTG Welcomes New Saskatchewan BTG Coordinator Leanne

BTG Welcomes New Saskatchewan BTG Coordinator Leanne

Let’s extend a warm Bridging the Gap welcome to our newest BTG program coordinator: Leanne Schellenberg. Leanne was born and raised in Saskatoon and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 2012 with a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology.

She’s a well-rounded athlete who played competitive softball for 13 years, played high-school volleyball, basketball and track, and even competed for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies as a pentathlete and sprinter for four years. Now she enjoys going to the gym, volunteering with KidSport, baking and reading.

We sat down with Leanne to ask what she thinks of her job so far:

Q: Describe your role as a BTG coordinator?

A: I think my role as a BTG coordinator is to recruit and promote wheelchair sports to all people.  I want to encourage people to be active and live a healthy lifestyle that involves sports and recreation.  Hopefully, I can help inspire people to step out of their comfort zone and try something new and find a new passion in their lives.  The goal for me is to make a fun and supportive atmosphere where people can enjoy the activity, socialize with others and make it so they want to come back!

Q: What do you like about your job so far?

A:  I have met so many great people!  It has been fun going out and meeting individuals that work with SWSA and BTG.  I have got to play wheelchair basketball with the mini team in Saskatoon and have done a couple of trade shows to recruit both participants and volunteers.  I have been able to help a few clubs and apply for a couple grants as well.  As you can see, there is always something different going on.

Q:  How did you get interested in para-sports?

In university I had the opportunity to take a class “Physical Activity for Persons with Impairment,” which gave me the opportunity to play wheelchair basketball and rugby, sledge hockey and goal ball.  It was so much fun and really made me appreciate the para-sports world.

Q:  What would you say to someone who’s thinking of coming out to a BTG event?

Please come!  We will have a lot of fun together and the people here are great!

Welcome, Leanne! We’re so excited to have you on the team!
