Parasport NB Launches Inspired. Active. Independent Campaign

This past March, Para NB Sport & Recreation launched a series of daily videos featuring New Brunswickers with physical disabilities who lead active lifestyles.

Christel Robichaud (sailing) and Katherine Murray (fitness) along with Jacob LeBlanc (sledge hockey), all of Moncton, helped launch the series at the Greater Moncton YMCA.

The Y is a partner facility offering inclusive activities and an accessible space for physical activity.

Para NB received an IWK Community Grant which is being used to develop YouTube videos and posters that will share the profiles, skills and experiences of five young New Brunswickers, adult women and seniors with a physical disability who are currently involved in sports, recreation and active living.

The featured participants are seen as true role models with a passion for their activities, including Metro Moncton residents like Jacob LeBlanc of Moncton, a young sledge hockey player, or Carly Smith (swimming), Christel Robichaud (sailing), and Katherine Murray (fitness).

“We are excited to support this worthwhile initiative,” said Jamie Shanks, Para NB management team member and executive director of Recreation New Brunswick.

“Seeing individuals with a physical disability engage in physical activity, recreation and sport can give others, with and without a disability, the motivation needed to live a healthier lifestyle,” Shanks said.

Minister of Healthy and Inclusive Communities Dorothy Shephard called physical activity one of the pillars of a healthy lifestyle.

“This campaign shows the importance of including sport and recreational activities as part of everyone’s daily routine, regardless of their age, gender or ability.”

Everyone is invited to “like” and “share” and “retweet” posts of each profile from the Para NB Facebook page and Twitter account, and watch the videos on the Para NB YouTube channel. A new video will be launched every day this week. Sharing the posts will enter you into a draw to win a hockey sledge, donated by Unique Inventions and valued at $700.
