Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association Hosts First Saskatoon Para Sport Day

SWSA was fortunate enough to partner with the City of Saskatoon, the Canadian Paralympic Committee, the Canadian Sport Center – Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Blind Sports Association to bring the first Para Sport Day to Saskatoon students.

Students from throughout Saskatoon over took the Cosmo Civic Center for a day of celebration of Paralympic Sport.  The morning kicked off with a motivational presentation from Amy Alsop, three-time Paralympian and two-time gold medallist in the sport of goal ball. The students then proceeded through activity sessions that involved sledge hockey, wheelchair basketball, para-nordic skiing, goal ball and yoga.

In the afternoon, other sport organizations set up a trade show type event to showcase their adaptive sport programs.  Sports and groups in attendance included Saskatchewan Sailing Association, Wakeboard and Waterski Saskatchewan, Cyclones Road and Track Club, Radius, Tennis Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Cycling Association, First Steps Wellness Center,  SASKI Skiing for the Disabled, SWSA and Saskatchewan Blind Sports Association.  Groups were asked to have an event that students could sign up for to ensure that they can get involved while their interest is  piqued.

The event was a huge success and we would like to thank all of our partners, volunteers and participants for joining us.  Organizers hope to host a similar event in Regina in the upcoming months.
